Let's play by our own rules

What's wrong with money?

Modern money stinks to high heaven. It is a game invented - quite recently - by the rich and mostly played by the rich. Its rules are designed to benefit the ones who have, neglecting and harming the ones who don't. This results in social inequality, unrest and sometimes economic crises.

National currencies are that pervasive, that most people can't even imagine alternatives. But they exist. We can start our own game. One that benefits the community and the underprivileged. We can play by our own rules. Read here how.

What is groupcash?

The goal of groupcash is to make it easier, cheaper and safer for anybody to run their own open, complementary currency. It defines standards on which applications for managing and trading in many different kinds of open, independently run currencies can be built.

While it has some core assumptions about currencies, groupcash is not a currency itself but a platform for tools for making your own currency. What kind of currency that is and what rules it follows is completely up to you. Read the full introduction here.

How can I get involved?

If you would like to start your own complementary currency, use these resources to get an idea on how to get started. If you then decide to use groupcash for your currency, great! Just drop us a line and we'll get you started.

The project is still in an early stage to there is plenty to do. If you're a technical person, help us improve the specifications, or to build software systems. In any case just let us know, any kind of help is very much appreciated.

What's happening?

At the moment we're mostly busy implementing the design and prototyping a web application to create a proof of concept.

Next we will start pilot projects in Thimphu and some rural communities of Bhutan. If you want to stay up-to-date, just follow groupcash on twitter.
